The Evansville Boxing Club is the oldest amateur
boxing club in southwestern Indiana. Founded in 1984 by Richard Hildebrandt, the club has won the Indiana Golden Gloves
team championship twice (1999 and 2000) and has produced 16 Golden Gloves open division champions, 3 Indiana Junior Olympics
champions, 2 state and regional Silver Gloves champions and a national Junior Olympics champion.
One of our members, Daniel Moldanado, finished
his amateur career at 52-10 and is now 20-2 as a pro. He is currently the IBA world featherweight champion and
also holds the WBA Latin-American and NABA featherweight titles.
We are a member club of the Indiana Amateur Boxing
Association, a Local Boxing Committee (region) of USA Boxing, Inc. The IABA is the sanctioning authority for amateur
boxing in the state of Indiana. Richard Hildebrandt, our head coach, is president of the IABA. His wife,
Jeaneene, is a past-president. Six of our members, Dick and Jeaneene Hildebrandt, Chuck Allen, Joey Hammon, J. J. Budde
and Russ Davis serve as USA Boxing officials (referees, judges and timekeepers).
All you need to do to join is show up. Club
membership is free and open to men and women of all ages (you can box at age 8). Other than shoes, we supply
everything you need to box -- gloves, mouthpieces, helmets, sparring equipment and heavy bags. We have boxers of all races,
sexes, ages and vocations. We meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. (no Thursdays during
March and early April) at the north end of the Newsome Center in downtown Evansville, just east of the courthouse complex
near the intersection of Walnut St. and Heidelbach (for map and directions, see FAQ at left).
Our club is a friendly and tight-knit group.
We prepare hard, especially in the months leading up to the Indiana Golden Gloves tournament in March and April of
each year.
If you are interested in boxing competitively or in just experiencing the sport and getting
in shape, contact Dick Hildebrandt or Chuck Allen (see Contacts page link at left).
Boxing is one of the oldest and most fundamental of sports and provides its participants
with an unmatched opportunity for personal challenge. Whatever you think of the sport now, if you become involved in boxing,
you will likely never leave it. The sport is addictive and it develops character, strength, and confidence. You
will not find a sport in which safety, sportsmanship, adherence to rules, respect
for opponents, self-discipline and courage are more important.
You can join us to box, to train or just to help the team. Besides boxers,
we need organizers, fund raisers, public relations persons, photographers, videographers, referees, timekeepers, judges,
physicians and strong backs. The work is rewarding and the sport takes on a whole new meaning when you
have a friend in the ring. Come and see us. The boxers will become
like family to you.
